When it comes to longevity, games franchises are in a league of their own.

The best ones haven’t just nailed the art of cashing in on a good name, but actually manage to keep each new installment feeling fresher, looking sharper and playing better than the version before.

And two games more than any other have us twitching our thumbs in nervous anticipation every time a new release is announced: the one where you kick a ball at a net, and the one where you shoot the living shit out of stuff.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – out November 13

After the original Call of Duty: Black Ops took more than a billion dollars in sales in just a month, it was little wonder that the boys and girls over at Activision would bring out a follow-up. Needless to say, it looks bloody brilliant.

If you really like guns, explosions and getting mullered by South Korean teenagers over the interwebs on multiplayer mode, but you just can’t wait until September, you can always wile away the hours on the fourth and final downloadable package for Modern Warfare 3.
