The five greatest games of the year
If you're looking for a title to impress, you can't go far wrong with these babies.

1. Skyrim. Unquestionably the biggest and best game released this year, Skyrim is an adventure of epic proportions. Even if you're not into the whole swords-and-sorcery bit, we can't recommend this enough – it's beautifully designed, intricate, fascinating, satisfying and a long list of other fancy words we can't be bothered to type right now.

2. Saints Row the Third. Balls-out mayhem that's maybe slightly too much fun, as it leaves other games looking grey and tired in comparison. Like old porridge. More fun than running downhill holding lit fireworks, and far less dangerous.

3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Cover-based cyberpunk shooting blended seamlessly with RPG mechanics make this one of the finest, and most exhilarating, games of the year. Infuriating boss battles and an unwieldy quest system are massively overshadowed by the fact you get WHACKING GREAT SWORDS that shoot out of your ELBOWS. YES.

4. Batman: Arkham City. The closest you will ever get to being Batman, save working out for four hours a day and becoming a crime-fighting billionaire while you're at it. The main plot might be a bit short, but the visceral combat more than makes up for it.

5. Portal 2. Everyone needs to play this game. This science-fiction first-person puzzler is raw videogame brilliance distilled into physical form by the software wizards at Valve; tricky, funny and decidedly clever all the way through. Plus, it's got Steven Merchant in it! What's not to like?
