Why we love Carly Rae Jepsen
As cute a chipmunk but with the singing skills of a classically trained bluebird, Carly is one of our favourite new pop-music ladies to have emerged in recent years. Although she first entered Britain’s national consciousness when her 2012 hit Call Me Maybe hypnotised the nation with its perky and instantly addictive catchiness, she’d been a Big Deal in her native Canada since 1998, when she came third on sing-songing TV contest Canadian Idol.
She had a few hits in her homeland, but things really went mega-sized when fellow Canuck Justin Bieber released a YouTube video of him and girlfriend Selena Gomez lip-syncing to Call Me Maybe>. The video went overnight-worldwide-viral, and the rest is popular-music history.
So you’ve got Justin Bieber to thank for your Carly Rae Jepsen crush. That’s right: you’re indebted to the Bieber. Suck it up.
