Why we love Chanel Iman
What’s more exciting than looking at a Victoria’s Secret Angel? Looking at a NEW Victoria’s Secret Angel, that’s what. It’s like when Jeremy Clarkson tells you there’s a new Zonda on Top Gear - we’d say a new Ferrari but the Zonda always looks bloody awesome – you just know it’s going to be good. Anywho, Chanel Iman is one of the newest of the crew at VS, and she fits in rather well.
Chanel’s story of discovery is pretty standard in a way. She had wanted to be a model from a young age, so she used to study fashion magazines and practice poses in front of her stuffed animals. When she was thirteen, her aunt took her to several modelling agencies in California, and the next month she was subject to “dozens of offers”. She signed with the Ford Modeling Agency, and within 18 months had finished third in their ‘Supermodel of the World’ contest. Not a bad effort.
At 16 she was walking runways as an a-list model, and was the youngest ever model to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine. By the time she was 19 she had hit the biggest of the big time – appearing in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. The following year, she officially earned her wings as an Angel, and put herself in prime position for endless FHM.com coverage alongside the likes of Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, Erin Heatherton and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. She’s been picked out as the future of the modelling business, but she probable doesn’t mind the now as she earned $6million in 2010 and is expected to make that $9million in 2011. Tough gig.
