Cher Lloyd facts

  • Cher's most famous for appearing on The X Factor, but she also appeared on the lawyer-baiting Text Factor, which is a sort of discount version of the proper show.

  • She's released such songs as Swagger Jagger, With Ur Love and Want U Back. Presumably the backs of her album covers must be so small she can't use proper words.

  • If you rearrange the letters of her name, you get “Old Cheryl.” Which is a shame, because “New Cheryl” would have been far more prophetic given her relationship and similarity to Georgie popstar Cheryl Cole.

Why we love Cher Lloyd

Much like those little plastic barriers at the checkout in supermarkets, Cher Lloyd divides people. But not their shopping. She's rubbish at that. Instead, she splits musical opinion, and never more so than with her 2011 debut single Swagger Jagger.

Swagger Jagger is a song so earwormy it counts as a class B drug, and you can get kicked out of nightclubs for trying to listen to it in the bathroom. It showcases Cher Lloyd's talents – some rapping, some singing, some looking good on camera – admirably. Not everyone seemed to think so, though – despite earning more than twenty two million plays on Youtube, the song still has more Dislikes than Likes. We'll let you form your own opinion.

Cher Lloyd is a product of The X Factor – although she didn't win, because no-one really seemed to be voting for her, the judges saw some talent and kept her around as long as possible in the 2010 series. After she finished in fourth place she was soon signed by Syco Music to produce an album, and she did. That album is called Sticks+Stones, which is nice, and possibly a reference to the way she was bullied at school - due to her mum's Romani ancestry, she'd often get called a “pikey", which is hardly fair.

Whether you love her or hate her, Cher Lloyd seems to be sticking around like an unwrapped toffee in a particularly warm trouser pocket, and she's here to stay. Our advice? Learn to like her, and she might become as easy on your ear, as she is on your eye.
