Elle Macpherson was actually born Elle Gow, but somebody made a mistake when she registering for school and her name got changed from her birth father's to her stepfather's. Ah well, Macpherson has a much better ring to it, don't you think?
She rose to fame after appearing in magazine (she was married to Elle's creative manager at the time) and then wore swimsuits for American magazine Sports Illustrated. It was around that time she was given ridiculous nickname 'The Body' due to her measurements, which are really good, though we never understand those things – is the top measurement her neck size? She soon branded up with videos, calendars and lingerie.
In fact she went massive, a bona fide phenomenon, the kind that gains loads of news attention, even though there's nothing much to say. But the best thing she did was appear naked in Sirens with really big boobs after gaining weight – it was perfect adolescent fodder if you could ignore Hugh Grant. Oh, and in 1997 nude pictures were stolen from her house. And she was Joey's girlfriend in Friends before he was fat.
