The daughter of a welder (father) and a cleaner (mother), Arterton had a pretty normal life in Gravesend, Kent, though she did go to grammar school, so is still posh. After that she signed up for drama college and somebody realised she'd look good as a sixth former, so she made her big time debut as a head girl in St Trinian's, reportedly beating Sienna Miller to the part.
