Last weekend’s England vs USA match was a profoundly un-enjoyable affair. Unless you’re Scottish. In which case you probably toasted your Irn Bru to Rob Green and laughed heartily at the deluded St George’s flag-draped England fans who had been loudly proclaiming that this was “our year” to anyone that would listen.

Those of us supporting England saw a frustrating display capped off by Green’s howler and the sight of Shaun Wright-Phillips running down blind alleys and generously providing Tim Howard with goal kick practice.

In the light of some of the dross served up in the opening round of games, England’s performance against America wasn’t the horror show it was made out to be in some quarters – a draw is by no means disastrous against easily the best other team in your group. But Capello and England’s fans will be crossing their metatarsals for a much-improved performance against lowly Algeria this evening.

David James looks set to take over in goal and his (relatively) safe hands will (might) restore confidence to the (horribly patched up) defence. You can get 6/4 at that England will keep a clean sheet.

It’s surely Emile Heskey’s last chance to impress this evening before Fabio tries something, someone, anyone else up front and he’s 7/4 with to score at any time. It’s got to happen someday, right?

On the other hand if you want to commit the heinous sin of placing an insurance bet to take the edge of the horror of an England defeat, will give you a tempting 11/1 for the Algeria win. Alternatively, if you’re Scottish – double your pleasure!

Bets of the day:

Emile Heskey to score at any time v Algeria  7/4
England to keep a clean sheet v Algeria 4/6
England to win 3-1 v Algeria 11/1
Algeria to win v England 11/1
