Being a guy is great. We get to drink beer and eat red meat for every single meal if we want to, can play golf all day long with some of your best buds without regret if the day allows it, and, yes, we can even get away with scratching our balls in public without anyone saying anything to us.
As great as being a man is, though, there's always room for improvement. That's why we're giving you 10 simple steps to make yourself a better man—which, if we're being honest, is something we should all be striving to be.
Everyone. Your Job. Your significant other. Your family. Your friends. Your hobbies. Your faith. Want to be the man you want to be? Stop worrying about what you think makes you happiest and start focusing on loving the things that already do. No one's going to hand you a plate of happiness, so make your own to be the greatest you that you can be.
11. Be An Example
Along the same lines as loving is this—be an example for other people. Gandhi once said, "Be the change that you wish to see in the world," so while it'd be easy to chew out a waitress who messed up your order or curse the person who just cut you off, doing the opposite is, sadly, more impressive. We've become a bitter, self-righteous society, being the opposite will leave a bigger impact than you might imagine.
10. Take Time For Yourself
Whether in a relationship or single, it's important to focus on yourself every once in awhile. Sure, it sounds like the right thing to do to take your lady to dinner or hit the bars with your buddies, but slowing down, readjusting your mind and focusing on yourself can be more important at times.
9. Work Out
I don't know about you, but I'm at my most happiest when I fall into a routine that involves my normal five-mile/day run and I can clear my mind, be by myself and listen to music. Working out doesn't mean you need to become a bodybuilder who's all jacked up and only drinks protein shakes, so go at whatever your pace needs to be in order to stay physically and emotionally healthy.
8. Find Your Routine
Speaking of routine, it's important to get into one—even if you're a stubborn asshole like me who would rather not. No two days are ever the exact same, that's what makes life so beautiful, but having a few things that you can look forward to doing each day will help ease stress and help maintain your focus on what needs to get done—which helps with efficiency so you can do things you really prefer.
Remember the old school slogan that said "reading is FUN-damental?" Turns out that it was actually true. Your mind might be more mature than the sponge that it was when you were an infant, but that doesn't mean it's any less prone to welcoming new information, and reading will allow you to do just that. Learning something new each day should be your No. 1 priority, no matter how big or small that is.
6. Have Sex
Guys love sex, clearly, so it's important to maintain a healthy and balanced sex life in order to stay happy. This doesn't mean humping everything that you come in contact with, but it does mean you can flirt with randoms when single, your girlfriend when dating and spoil your wife when married. Sex, guys, it's good for the soul.
5. Accept Change
This can be as simple as accepting a new hobby that you're uncomfortable doing, to something big like moving to a new city. Bottom line is change is inevitable, so why stress and try to control it? Knowing that things will never be as good or as bad as they are is essential in becoming a better man. Adversity will happen, it's how you respond to it that will make or break you.
This one might seem like it's a silly step, but if you're not getting enough sleep, you're not being your best self during the day. Working your ass off at all hours is a great way to impress your boss and show coworkers you're a hard-working son-of-a-bitch, but it's unsustainable over the long haul, so don't forget to get some shut eye without regrets—even if that means a little weekend nap on a bright sunny afternoon.
3. Enjoy The Journey
In a world that insists we know everything the second something happens, one of the best pieces of advice a successful journalist once told me was this, "just enjoy the journey." It's important to remember the simple words each and everyday, as they force you to slow down and put things into perspective. Look, we all want to become successful, like, tomorrow, but the journey to get there is what makes life fun. Sometimes, the best teacher is also a student.
2. Stop Comparing Yourself
All too often, guys measure themselves against others—hey, we're all competitive and we all want to be successful, so don't think you're the only one who does this. Problem is, just because you read about a 20- or 30-something who has built a successful company and you haven't, doesn't mean you're more of a failure. This holds true with women, too. Be yourself, stay focused on what matters and go make great things happen to make others wish they were you.
1. Stay Positive. Stay Hungry. Stay Humble.
It might not seem like it's groundbreaking advice, but staying positive, hungry and humble will go a long way in making your life a hell of a lot more happy. Whether you've fallen in a rut and can't find yourself a ladder to get out, or you just started a new role that's paying you more than you've ever made before, approaching each day with a positive attitude, willing to learn and remaining nice to people is good karma and good for the soul.
