We've said it once and we'll say it again, the only two guarantees in this life are death and taxes. Unfortunately, the latter isn't quick and painless. Quite the contrary, actually. Taxes are something we've got to deal with every freakin' year and unless you're taking home a fat refund check, it can be incredibly disappointing.
As it turns out, according to Howmuch.net, very few folks are taking home that aforementioned fat refund check. In the map featured below, you'll find the states divided into four subcategories based on he size of their average tax refund — Dark green states have average tax refunds over $3,001, light green states between $2,751 and $3,000, light blue states between $2,501 and $2,750 and dark blue states between $2,300 and $2,500.

Frankly speaking, the fact that so few states break that $3,000 is just depressing. Considering the amount of money most people pay in taxes each year, it's absurd that the refunds are so dismal. Just look at Maine! $2,302 is hardly the tax refund most people dream of. Only three states of the top five are above 3K. Not even New York could break that barrier.
Top Five States By Average Tax Refund Size
- Texas: $3,133
- Oklahoma: $3,088
- Louisiana: $3,073
- New York: $2,986
- Connecticut: $2,958
Bottom Five States By Tax Refund Size
- Maine: $2,302
- Oregon: $2,342
- Vermont: $2,348
- Wisconsin: $2,367
- Montana: $2,367
