We all love a good underdog story, and because the movie Rocky was released 40 years ago, November 21, 1976, we thought it be appropriate to quickly give you six, real-life David vs. Goliath instances in the film's honor.
The movie, which was filmed in just 28 days on a budget of just about $1 million, didn't just score at the box office that winter—racking up more than $225 million in theaters—but also went on to be nominated for 10 Oscar nominations, winning three: "Best Picture," "Best Director" and "Best Film Editing."
With a series of six sequels since, 1976's Rocky could, arguably, be called the greatest underdog story ever—but here are a few who are worthy challengers.
Colonel Sanders - Kentucky Fried Chicken
Many of us know him as the founder and creator of Kentucky Fried Chicken's secret recipe, but rising to the top of the coup wasn't easy for Colonel Sanders.
After his father died when he was five, Sanders quit school at 16 years old, was married by the time he was 18 and by 20 found himself separated from his wife and child—who later did return to the Colonel after convincing them to reconsider
He didn't give up hope, though.
Following years as a cook and retiring at age 65, Colonel Sanders borrowed $87 and went door-to-door to sell his chicken recipe, ultimately founding Kentucky Fried Chicken and becoming a billionaire by age 88.
