Whether it’s films, TV, novels, comic books or video games, there remains an effort to ensure that all of it is part of the expanding Star Wars universe—meaning that all of it is, presumably, connected in some way.
That tradition continues with the forthcoming Star Wars: Battlefront II video game, which is the result of a collaboration between EA DICE Motive Studios and Criterion Games, and which promises to span the entire Star Wars saga.
EA describes the game as follows:
“Dark-armored troopers stand beneath the smoldering remains of the shield generator on the Forest Moon of Endor. Their faces turn skyward to the distant menace of the Death Star looming overhead, a symbol of order in a war-torn galaxy. Like the Empire itself, the colossal battle station stands immutable, impregnable, and eternal. And with a flash of white, it explodes into a midday star. Welcome to Star Wars Battlefront II, with a new story mode taking players on an epic journey from the battle of Endor to the rise of the First Order.
What’s particularly intriguing about this game is that it will actually unfold from the point of view of the Imperials rather than the Rebel Alliance, bringing with it the interesting notion that the Rebels would be viewed as terrorists. Notes Motive game director Mark Thompson, “We’ve heard a lot about the heroes of the Rebellion, and we wanted to give the Empire heroes in that same era.”
Certainly no film in the franchise has ever taken that approach. The Empire—or its newest incarnation as the First Order, as established in 2015’s The Force Awakens—has never been presented as anything but the antagonists; the controlling dictatorship of the galaxy that the Rebel Alliance (now the Resistance) has had to fight back against.
While it doesn't release until later this year, here are the seven things that we do know about it at the moment—which only makes us wish it would hit shelves sooner rather than later.
