We've finally got our first look at the villainous Rita Repulsa, the main baddie in the upcoming "Power Rangers" reboot, and boy does she look different.
Elizabeth Banks was cast as Repulsa just a few months back, and Entertainment Weekly shared this exclusive shot showing her off in full Rita regalia:
She's a major departure from the original version from the 1993 "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" TV show we all know and love, and looks way more like the mini-boss Scorpina.
But this is the norm for gritty big-screen reboots -- full reimaginings of characters, extremely textured costumes and a morsel of fan service here and there. For example, Rita's new color palette is green and gold, a not-so-subtle callback to her beshielded Green Ranger. And who knows, maybe this is a version of her at the beginning of the film before she's tossed into a space-dumpster and imprisoned on the moon for 10,000 years by Zordon. When she comes out, hopefully she'll have her signature gray pigtail-looking things and her scepter.
Details on the film are really light right now, but we can expect the tone to be fairly grim in light of the popularity of film series like The Hunger Games, Divergent, and every other countless tween take on the formula. Where "Power Rangers" could stand out is on scale and humor, but until we know more we'll hold out hope.
As for the Rangers themselves, so far this is the only look we've got, and knowing Hollywood's recent penchant for turning expectations on their head, each character isn't who you likely think they are:
"Power Rangers" is slated for release in March 2017.
