If it seems like it's been decades since you've seen George Clooney on the small screen, that's because it has! After ending his TV reign as Dr. Doug Ross on E.R., Clooney retired to the box office hits (if you can even call that retiring). He traded commercials for ticket sales and really, who was going to complain? He still remained one of the best actors in Hollywood — no matter how mainstream. Well, folks, that's all about to change! The 56-year-old father of two is making a comeback in a major way and as with most prime entertainment in 2018, it's going to be steaming!
According to reports from PopSugar Clooney will be starring and directing a six-episode, limited-series adaptation of the 1961 Joseph Heller novel, Catch-22 for Hulu. We suspect this decision came about after seeing the immense results of book adaptations on film during this past award season. Heavy-hitters like Big Little Lies and The Handmaid's Tale being prominent examples. Hulu's chief content officer Joel Stillerman explained, as per the Hollywood Reporter:
"Catch-22 is a rare story that has withstood the test of time, not only as a literary masterpiece, but as a story that still resonates in today's political and social conversation," Stillerman said. "These are exactly the types of stories we want to be programming at Hulu, and we couldn't be happier to partner with George Clooney, Paramount TV, and this phenomenal group of creatives to bring one of the most well-known books of all time to viewers in a way that has never been seen before."
OK, you had us at George Clooney. The question remains, what else do we need to know? Six-episodes is pretty minimal. What is it about this series that's going to separate it from the countless other streaming options out there? Well, of course that's where we come in and explain. Below you'll find the details you're looking for, oh, and if you need a little refresher on Catch-22, you can buy it here. Don't worry, we won't be quizzing you.
In a very basic, yet well put together summary from, GradeSaver, a site we recommend to all lazy college students — Captain John Yossarian, a World War II bombardier, is stationed on the island of Pianosa. He is an individualist who seeks to protect his own life by fleeing to the hospital, since a “catch-22” in the Air Force regulations prevents him from being grounded for illness or obtaining a leave
Currently, Clooney is the only actor confirmed to be working on the project. He will be playing Colonel Cathcart.
The Premiere Date
A date has yet to be released for Catch-22, but we expect audiences will be able to tune in come 2019. Sigh, just like Game of Thrones.
We have no doubt that this series is going to be kickass and that Clooney, will undoubtedly be soaking up some serious award cred. In the meantime, try reading the book! You know, a little literature isn't going to kill you.
