How To Really Make Yourself (And Keep Yourself) Better In 2017

As the year comes to an end, millions of people will be setting themselves for potential failure as they proclaim that 2017 will bring out the best in them. That they'll volunteer, change their bad habit and step back to appreciate things every day.

Problem is, that lasts for about a month, then, boom, they fall back into the same routine that they always have had.

That's not to scare you or make you think you're a bad person, but it is a warning sign that you should be aware of, because making changes to your life don't just happen overnight. Since they take lots of work, we're giving you advice on how to really make yourself a better man once the calendar changes.

Patience

As stated above, bettering yourself doesn't happen overnight, it takes time, failures and, in many cases, the patience to go through the struggle to reach that next level.

For example, you may want to learn how to play the guitar, but can't play a lick. You're not expected to become Clapton overnight, so, through all the failures and distractions, remaining patient as you continue to practice your craft is critical in staying positive to reach your goal.

Persistence

Patience is great, but there's only so long you can wait to get to the level you want to. For that reason, it's persistence that's going to give you the drive to overcome all the struggles in your quest to make the changes you want to next year.

Listen

Contrary to popular belief, you don't know it all, so don't be stubborn enough to believe you do. Once you understand that, stop talking and listen to other people, because many of their struggles are things you can relate to as well.

Once you take a step back and stop trying to prove you're the smartest man in the room, find yourself a good mentor who can teach you things and will help model yourself after. These people are invaluable to your life, and won't hesitate to put you in your place to stay on the path you want to with both criticism and praise.

Humility

Did Michael Jordan believe in his own hype? No. He stayed hungry and, in fact, got hungrier as he experienced more success in his career, staying humble and grounded as best he could. Take note.

Whether you've just gotten a promotion at work or simply got a compliment from someone, don't let things go to your head, but rather remain modest and use those things as building blocks for whatever your bigger goal is.

Expect success, don't flaunt success.

Hard Work

What, you think you're just going to better yourself by chance? There's only a handful of people who get lucky and win the lottery, guys, and chances are you're not one of them.

That means it's on you to get gritty, down and dirty and to roll up your sleeves and work your ass off to achieve the goals you've set out for. No one else is going to get you there.

Discipline

Want to change up your eating habits and consume less junk food? That's a commendable goal, now stay disciplined enough to make it last for longer than a few weeks or months.

You are the master of your destiny, so don't allow outside factors like work, significant others, friends or anything else get in your way from doing what you need to in order to become your better self.

Motivation

While all of these other traits are good to have in the quest to better yourself, don't underestimate the power of simple motivation. I like to refer to this as the "Kobe Gene," aptly named after Kobe Bryant.

This is the belief that, even when people doubt you, try and tear you down and you have ever right to be complacent, you carry a chip on your shoulder that makes you dig deep to reach levels that will even surprise you.

Positivity

In the midst of all the different things you have going on in your life, it's simple to let even the smallest things bring you down. But if you're really looking to make a change with yourself next year, maintaining a positive attitude is key.

You'll be defeated in many aspects of your life—sometimes, multiple times per day. Learn from those losses and look at how positive side to avoid the same mistakes again.

After a 2016 that was full of different emotions, go forth and make 2017 your best year yet—and use these tips to make it last for the full 365 days and beyond!
