After months of speculation and various leaks, Apple's newest iPhone 8 finally hit shelves earlier this week — September 22 — with people (as always) lining up outside stores to try and snag the latest and most recent smartphone the company produced. And, while there are various features the company touted as being "state-of-the-art," one of the biggest was the claim by Apple that the phone has the "most durable glass ever in a smartphone, front and back," per its website.
Naturally, anytime a multibillion dollar company like Apple proclaims something like that, people are going to do whatever they can to prove them wrong, putting the iPhone 8 through the toughest tests in hopes of breaking the thing. We know, people are so skeptical sometimes, huh?
Well, a new video that has gone viral on YouTube puts Apple's glass back claim under the microscope, with the account user — PhoneBuff — pitting the Apple iPhone 8 against the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 to see which one truly has the best durability. Here's what the results showed.
Uh, what the hell, Apple? With the guys over at PhoneBuff dropping both the iPhone 8 and Galaxy Note 8 from the same height on a scale, the video reveals that, indeed, both smartphones didn't withstand the fall. That's not too surprising, but it is when the people over at Apple make a bold claim like the one they did about the strength of the back glass. Let's just call a spade a spade: they lied.
Of course, this shouldn't be too surprising considering the damn thing is glass — which, you know, tends to shatter when dropped. That said, seeing how the iPhone 8 shatters like it does after just one drop should be concerning to those who drop the hefty price for one, which is $699-$799.
Look, there are some seriously awesome features with the Apple iPhone 8 — which we outlined here — but if you're one of the people who think having one without a case is a smart idea because of the company's glass claim, you'll be sorely disappointed.
