WARNING: This article is not aligned with your Mom & Pop’s American Dream. It will be highly condemnable by even your most trusted advisors. Certainly, it will be looked at as deplorable by your friends, family and loved ones. But, what the f-ck do these paper pushers know anyway?
Job hopping, for all intents and purposes, is the great modern faux pas. Show some damn loyalty for peat sakes! These millennials, they all live for instant gratification — Blah, blah, blah. Whatever you say, old man, just stick to your prune juice and let us be. If you believe this rhetoric, you’re more lost than them.
For starters, the loyalty defense is all good and grand, but a company will have no problem firing your ass if you’re under delivering or they’re losing money. Sorry, but, in case you haven't noticed, loyalty is dead.
Maybe job hopping is looked down upon, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t the end goal when you’re trying to advance your career and get paid while you’re still young. What people seem to overlook are the unmatched benefits that job hoppers possess compared to their counterparts, like learning how to grow a network or how to be fluid in the face of adversity.
Of course, this isn’t universal.
You’ll have a tougher time pulling this sh-t in the financial industry compared to the creative industry. Regardless, that’s no excuse for settling. You have to find your output and completely own it!
I’m not going to play coy with you, you’re leaving a lot of money on the f-cking table by staying loyal to your crappy employer for years on end. But, we’ll save that for the end, because, my friend, life isn’t all about money. It’s mostly about money, but it’s also somewhat about happiness, getting some action, and trap music — I’m not too confident on the ratio so I won’t even try. But life’s about a lot of things.
Job hopping isn’t easy. It’s quite difficult. You have to prove your worth at every turn and convince people to believe in you.
Everyone knows the best way to getting your foot in the door is by knowing someone at another company who will go to bat. That’s earned marketing and that’s lesson No. 1. You’re not you — you’re not Steve, or Janet, or Beth, or Pedro — you’re a brand, and when you start to look at yourself as such, that’s when you start to unlock your potential.
With that mindset, the biggest obstacle becomes, how do you get people to want you on their team?
Build your damn network and bring some f-cking value to the table and be someone people want to work with. Easiest way to accomplish that is to check your ego at the door, roll up your sleeves and have a get to F'in work attitude. Once you master how to do this at every opportunity, moving around becomes possible.
When it comes to being a professional today, hiring managers aren’t looking for single tracked minds. Regardless of industry, in today’s day and age, you have to be adaptable. Those who stay in their lane are a dying breed. You have to be multifunctional, a hybrid of sorts.
Look at sports as a microcosm. Basketball went from five, defined positions to a hybrid positions. Everyone plays everywhere, with defenders needing to be able to switch on all players, regardless of "position." More is asked, more is required, and being able to use everything at your disposal to learn and operate quickly is a trait of a successful job hopper.
Job hopping is only fit for those mental martial artist — the serious Bruce Lee types sitting in the conference room, on some be water sh-t.

With a new job, there’s no leaning back on past accomplishments. You want a seat at the table, that’s got to be re-earned. That forces you to learn how to be comfortable doing what you f-cking do regardless. Once you’re an elite job hopper, and a corporate martial artist, you’ll have the confidence to walk into any room and know what you bring to the table.
As you can see, there are multiple benefits and tools developed by job hopping. This isn’t an article advocating jumping job-to-job with no rhyme or reason. Speaking on experience, I enter each job with a goal, and I allow the job to either shift into the role I want it to, or find one that can push me. You gain nothing being complacent, so keep striving forward, wherever you are.
Oh, hell, I almost forgot; the money! Yeah, there’s a hell of a lot of it out there, so you’re getting nowhere trying to climb the corporate ladder. As a wise man once said, “Chaos is a ladder”, so burn that shit to the ground and get yours playa, playa.
