Let’s face it: when it comes to Warner Bros/DC, you cannot get away from the Batman universe. Of all of their superhero brands, it is the one that seems to be as close to a sure thing as they can get. Hence the announcement that there is going to be a Suicide Squad spin-off focused on Jared Leto’s The Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
This news comes just a few days after word got out that they’re producing a standalone Joker origin film to be produced by Martin Scorsese; standalone in the sense that it’s not tied into the studio’s current efforts of universe building, the next installment of which will be November’s Justice League. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is going to be written and directed by This Is Us executive producers Glen Ficarra and John Requa.
Notes THR, “The film is described as a 'criminal love story,' according to one source, featuring the two murdering maniacs who are cornerstones in the Batman mythos. One insider offered this: 'an insane and twisted love story. When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine."
At the moment, the Joker and Harley Quinn feature is scheduled to go after the sequel to Suicide Squad, though those plans could possibly change depending on actor availability. Negotiations are currently underway with Leto and Robbie, and one would assume that depending on the way things go the decision will be made to go with Suicide Squad 2 or the spin-off first.
Recently, WB animation got into the act as well, releasing the animated movie Batman And Harley Quinn, which sees the Dark Knight and Nightwing finding themselves with no choice but to team up with Harley to stop a global threat posed by Poison Ivy and the Floronic Man.
The Dark Knight himself is expected to be featured in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, though there is no word yet on whether or not Ben Affleck will be reprising the role he first played in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, reprised in the first Suicide Squad film and will be returning in Justice League.
Like we said, everything’s Batman!
