There are always breakthrough musicians that come around every year, but Justina Valentine is one who might be taking over the scene in a way like we haven't seen from a female artist in a long time. That's because Justina, who is well-known from her time on MTV's improv show Wild 'N Out, recently released a new mixtape entitled FEMINEM, which not only pay homage to rapper Eminem, but puts a crazy spin on some of the legendary musician's classics.
In addition to having some serious skills on the mic, Justina Valentine happens to be an all-around talent, too, with her down-to-earth attitude and outgoing personality. Maybe that's why her time on Wild 'N Out has been so successful? Well, along with those damn looks of hers — which, admittedly, will grab a guy's attention in a hurry!
Prior to Justina's FEMINEM release, the red-haired beauty's album, Scarlet Letter, saw incredible success, even landing in the top-30 R&B charts on iTunes. If that's not impressive, we don't know what is?
Not to outdo herself, the New Jersey native was also a cast member of the MTV show The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars, allowing her to put her competitiveness and feistiness on display in a different way for cameras and fans to see. Hell, she even reached the Finals, so, what's not to like about this gal?
Getting the chance to sit down with Justina, we asked her about her new music, some wild stories and what to expect next. Let's just say that she left us swooning and wanting more — which, thankfully, we're sure to get thanks to her budding talents and career.
FHM: You Got Your Big Break From MTV's "Wild 'N Out," What Was That Experience Like?
Justina Valentine: "Wild ‘N Out has been such a blessing and an amazing platform for me to share my gifts with the world. It’s literally the perfect show for me; Rrapping, freestyling, improv and being goofy. Literally, no better fit."
FHM: Any Crazy Stories From The Show That Even Made You Ask Yourself, "WTF?"
Justina Valentine: "It’s an adventure and an experience every single show. The beauty of improv is that it’s never the same and can never be replicated that same way again. There have been episodes where someone in the front row will fall victim to the comedians and become the butt of an ongoing joke all throughout the episode." (laughs)
FHM: We Know Your Recent Album, Scarlet Letter, Saw Some Serious Success, What Was It Like Recording It?
Justina Valentine: "My most recent album, Scarlet Letter, saw a good deal of success and I was super proud of that. The recording process is always fun. I work with my brother and one of my best friends, Shy Boogs. He’s the Timberland to my Missy. I’ve been working with him my whole career, so our creative process is organic and easy."
FHM: And Working With Fetty Wap, Who's Featured On The Tune "Candy Land."
Justina Valentine: "Fetty is super dope. He’s never showed me anything but love no matter how big he got. He has put on for Jersey in a huge way that hasn’t been done in years."
FHM: Your New Mixtape, FEMINEM, Is About To Release, Can You Talk About It A Little Bit?
Justina Valentine: "I released my new mixtape, FEMINEM, as soon as I finished filming season 10 of Wild ‘N Out. This project has garnered so much recognition, and, truthfully, I was overwhelmed with the response. There was so much I wanted to get off my chest while sharing my story, and FEMINEM allowed me to do that. I knew my supporters would love it, and they did! It also put a lot of new eyeballs on me."
FHM: I Mean, You Remix A Bunch Of Eminem Classic Hits, That's No Easy Task. Did You Feel A Sense Of Responsibility To KILL Those Songs Because, You Know, It's Eminem!
Justina Valentine: "Of course I felt the responsibility to kill it; Eminem is one of the G.O.A.T.S.! He’s the best lyricist of all-time, in my opinion, and I knew that, if I embarked on this project, it would have to be nothing short of amazing. I wouldn’t disrespect his work with anything less."
FHM: Your New Single, My Funny Valentine, Was Produced By The Shy Boogs And Uses A Frank Sinatra Jazz Standard, How'd That Idea Come About?
Justina Valentine: "Well, the name is Justina 'Valentine', so it just felt right. Frank Sinatra is one of my favorite artists of all-time. He is also from Jersey and Italian... so I’m hoping that, somehow, I’m related to him. Shy and I thought it would be a dope flip for me."
FHM: You Also Took Part In MTV’s "The Challenge: Champs Vs. Stars," Was It As Nuts As It Seems It Is?
Justina Valentine: "The Challenge was an amazing experience. It definitely opened me up to a new demographic and some really dedicated Challenge fans. I had a blast. I’m a tomboy and an athlete and very competitive, so I had an amazing time and even made it to the Finals!"
FHM: Any Juicy Details You Can Share From The Show?
Justina Valentine: "It’s as crazy as it looks. It almost came to blows a few times. Johnny Bananas broke into my room, stole my toilet seat and tried on all my clothes, jewelry, etc. Oh, and he put his toenail clippings in my grill." (laughs)
