As very active members of the Game of Thrones fandom, we get just a little bit testy coming across headlines like, "Amazon Might Make The Lord Of The Rings TV Show, Hopes It Will Be Next Game Of Thrones" and "Amazon, On The Hunt For The Next Game Of Thrones, In Talks To Make The Lord Of The Rings TV Show". We've got zero beef with J.R.R. Tolken (or the authors of those headlines) but c'mon, Amazon. It's not going to happen. You aren't going to find the next Game Of Thrones because there will never be another Game Of Thrones — point, blank, period.
Yes, we see the obvious parallels between both of the original texts. They both fit within the confines of the Fantasy genre (blah, blah, blah), but that isn't enough to make such a bold comparison, especially to suggest that a The Lord Of The Rings TV series could be a potential successor to GoT. According to Variety:
"Warner Bros. Television and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien are in talks with Amazon Studios to develop a series based on the late author’s “The Lord of the Rings” novels. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is said by sources with knowledge of the situation to be personally involved in the negotiations, which are still in very early stages."
Ugh, WTF is Jeff Bezos doing getting personally involved in dealmaking at Amazon Studios? Don't you have something better to do, Jeff? Apparently, as continued by Variety, he's a huge high fantasy and science fiction fan. Perfect, just what us Game Of Thrones fans need. Look, we're not suggesting there's no room for more great television in the world, it's just, well, back off trying to beat out shows that haven't even concluded yet, OK?! Plus, no offense, if The Lord Of The Rings movies are any testament to what the TV series will be like — we're gonna give it a hard pass, thanks.
