Pro Golfer Paige Spiranac Received Death Threats Over Showing "Too Much Skin" On The Course

It's a sad day in sports when a woman as talented as professional American golfer, Paige Spiranac has to step forward to share a story of harassment, blackmail, and even death threats. Unfortunately, stories such as these have become par for the course and frankly, we as a society should get our crap together — stat! Paige has recently made news headlines after revealing in an interview with The Guardian that she received a great deal of negative backlash during the 2015 Dubai Masters.

Because Spiranac is not ranked in the the top 1,000 players in the female circuit, some fans seems to believe that she's only invited to certain events because of her social media fame. Boasting 1.3 million followers on Instagram alone, it's clear Paige exceeds the popularity of an average professional golfer, but she should be penalized for that? We hardly think so.

Being attractive shouldn't override someone's talent! That's just a given. Unfortunately, Paige's looks have caused more than just false assumptions about her golf skills. Given the nature of the internet nowadays, it's all too simple for trolls and haters to come forward making serious threats and that's exactly Paige's experience. She explains to The Guardian:

"For people to say: 'You only show some cleavage, that’s why you have what you have,' is unfair. That’s the injustice that we face every day as women and I see it a lot in golf. There was a lot of media, it was really stressful and I found the experience really hard. I said I wasn’t coming back to play. People seem to think I got where I am because of the clothes that I wear. That’s unfair to me and unfair to all of my accomplishments. I was harassed, my family was harassed. I was receiving death threats, people were invading my privacy, I was being blackmailed. This was going on whilst I was trying to play."

We hope that Paige doesn't allow these people to hold her back! We'd encourage her to silence those haters and continue on her path to greatness! It's clear that there's a lot of deeply seated jealousy and misogyny at play. It's a real bummer and we're happy that Paige was brave enough to share her story! Support female athletes, y'all — no matter what they wear on course! It's really that simple.
