"What's the cruelest thing someone said to you as one of you was being dumped?" was the question posed to these Reddit users and while I understood it's a touchy subject, I never dreamed of the responses pouring in.
I guess I was under the impression that most breakups resemble a small, albeit detailed, conversation about "how it's just not working out" then both people hug and never speak again. Then I started thinking about my last break up and remembered that it took 13 months to actually stick, and we both nearly killed each other, so in that respect, my experience is a lot more normal than I once thought...which is actually kind of nice.
I mean, I don't necessarily relish in other people's pain, but if nothing else, this thread is a huge testament to the fact that breakups are messy as hell. Nobody handles them well. Seriously, NOBODY. I handpicked the responses below, but I can assure you out of the thousands of submissions, not one person was "chill" about the whole thing. Sure, eventually most of us move on and prosper, but for a little while it's hard not to think about eating ice cream out of carton all day and smoking crack and watching children's cartoons (order varies).
Holy sh-t, that last one was a doozy! Sleeping with his brother? Proposing to her then walking away? Not supporting her after her dad dies? Needing someone taller? Is this really the sort of stuff that humans are capable of, or is it all one-sick Reddit joke?
It's not a rhetorical question, I can answer it. This is exactly what humans are capable of, in fact, a casual, amicable breakup is the exception to the rule. You better be damn sure when you start dating someone because again, NO ONE wants to deal with the emotional trauma that accompanies an ending like this.
