Bad robot! No, not J.J. Abrams’ production company, but, instead, the artificial lifeforms that are a significant part of the various Alien films, the majority of which suck in terms of trustworthiness. Like Hal in 2001, the original Alien (1979) has Ash (Ian Holm), the science officer who reveals himself to be an android and one hellbent on having their secret mission completed… no matter who or what it takes. A bit of redemption comes in the form of Bishop (Lance Henriksen) in James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), an improved model that cannot harm humans. Of course, when Ridley Scott (who directed the original) came back to the franchise with the prequels Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), he brought with him a bad robot(!) in the form of Michael Fassbender’s David.
