Doctor Charles Forbin (Eric Braden) creates a computer named Colossus which has been designed to take control of America’s nuclear arsenal. No sooner does Colossus go online than it announces that “there is another system.” This turns out to be a Russian computer named Guardian. Shortly thereafter, the two computers demand to be connected with the threat of nuclear weapons being detonated if they’re ignored. The governments have no choice but to comply and they’re joined. At that stage, Colossus essentially takes over the world. This is an amazingly low-tech film, but incredibly powerful as we watch humanity gradually lose its position of power and futilely doing anything it can to prevent it. As Forbin comments, “Frankenstein should be required reading for every scientist.” If you’ve never seen it, seek it out. In fact, a great double feature would be Colossus and Wargames. Directed by Joseph Sargent.
