Eighty years after the character’s creation, the Shazam! movie will be coming to the big screen, with Zachary Levi in the title role. Additionally, Dwayne Johnson will be playing his enemy, Black Adam, in a solo film of his own before the two of them come together to duke it out in a separate adventure.
The character of Shazam was formerly known as Captain Marvel. Created in 1939 by writer Bill Parker and artist C.C. Beck, the character was so popular for a time that the comic’s sales outperformed those of Superman — ultimately leading DC to sue the character’s publisher, Fawcett, into bankruptcy and allowing them to obtain ownership of Cap. His alter ego is Billy Batson, who encounters an ancient wizard that informs him that, because of the purity of his heart, if he utters the word “SHAZAM”, he will be endowed with the powers of the ancient gods Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. In the process, a magical bolt of lightning transforms him from being a kid to becoming a super-powered adult.
The Shazam Movie isn’t scheduled to arrive until 2019, but what follows is our guide to everything you need to know to get ready for it.
