It's one of life's biggest mysteries: How do you get ketchup out of the bottle without slinging it all over the place and completely covering yourself with the condiment? Many people have tried various methods—the knife up the bottle top or smacking the side of it—but science has finally given us the answer.
A physicist from the University of Melbourne named Dr. Anthony Strickland did a lot of research with the tomato-based sauce, and here's what he came up with.
After running various tests and using his knowledge of physics, Strickland first came to the conclusion that ketchup shouldn't be in a glass bottle, stating that, because the substance is identified as a “soft solid” rather than a straight liquid, it goes against Sir Isaac Newton’s law of motion—which states that an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
That said, Strickland did formulate a three-step plan for you to stop struggling with getting the ketchup out.
- 1. Ensure that the lid is, in fact, on. Then shake the bottle upwards to spread the solid particles within the sauce evenly.
- 2. Turn the bottle upside down and quickly shake it downwards, abruptly stopping so the ketchup moves into the bottle neck.
- 3. Prior to opening, turn the bottle back up before unscrewing the lid and tilting at a 45-degree angle. Tap the bottle with a slowly increasing force for those stubborn pours.
Dr. Strickland also suggested in his research that, following these three steps, the trick to get the ketchup out is to "get the sauce flowing, but not too fast” to avoid a complete mess.
So, there you go, guys. You can now go forth and avoid embarrassment by showing everyone that you're the Ketchup King—assuming you don't just have a squeezable, plastic bottle to use instead.
