It’s that time of year again, when the broadcast networks have announced their new shows for the 2017-18 television season.
Every May they bring out their stars and creators, heralding each show as the next big thing. Of course they know—and the audience certainly knows—that most of these shows won’t be around next year. In fact, they’ve already got their ringers lined up “just in case,” in the form of a number of series that will be making their debut mid-season (or as a replacement for anything that doesn’t go the distance).
Sadly there’s no choice but to have a cynical view like this, because there’s no denying that history repeats itself year after year. Still, there are 20 new series that have been announced for fall by ABC, CBS, the CW, Fox and NBC representing a variety of genres, and from that list we’ve found 11 that we feel could be worthy of your time and binge-watching. Among them are dramas, comedies, sci-fi, sci-fi comedies, true crime and the continuing trend of reboots. There is admittedly some surprise that the recent trend of turning hit films into medicore TV shows is not continuing. For the moment.

Eighties excess is back... or at least the CW is hoping that it is. The battle between the Carringtons and the Colbys—two of this country’s richest fictional families—begin anew in this reboot, which centers on two women and a struggle over (what else?) their family money. Says the CW, “The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington, daughter of billionate Blake Carrington, and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal, a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class.” Normally we’d want to avoid this one. Let’s face it, the original took itself so seriously that it eventually crashed under the weight of its own growing campiness. But this version seems to know exactly what it is, and takes on that camp full force. You watch the trailer waiting for the first sign of a slap fight between the two women... and then it happens! We may apologize for recommending this one later, but, hey, you don’t know where we live.
