If you can imagine Deadpool without the costume, the scars and the healing ability, you may get a sense of Ryan Reynolds in The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Reynolds is the latter, who is hired by a former enemy who is a hitman (and played by Samuel L. Jackson), and the two of them need to put their differences aside—and there are a lot of them—so that they can take down a foreign dictator played by Gary Oldman.
From what the trailer reveals to us, this film is going to be insane, combining high-octane action with non-stop verbal jousting between the two leads as they try to stay alive until the end credits. It seems like one of those old-fashioned (but with a modern sensibility) “buddy” films like 48hrs., Lethal Weapon and Midnight Run.
Also aboard as leading lady is Salma Hayek, who seems pretty confident that there is going to be a sequel to this one. Recently making an appearance at the annual CinemaCon, she commented, “This film is so magnificent that I am going to have the courage to predict that there will be a sequel [see, we told you; FHM don’t lie]. The two stars of this film are, I think, the best people in the world to balance action and comedy.”
The writer is Tom O’Connor, who had written the screenplay for Fire With Fire (2012), while Patrick Hughes directs, having previously directed Red Hill (2010) and The Expendables 3 (2014).
Our personal highlight of this trailer? When an exasperated Reynolds proclaims, “I hope they kill him. I really do. This man singlehandedly ruined the word motherfucker.”
All you need to do is watch one of Jackson’s non-Marvel movies to understand exactly what Reynolds’ character is saying. Especially when, throughout the rest of the trailer, Jackson is dropping that particular f-bomb repeatedly.
