We've all been in a situation where we're sitting around doing nothing and all we want to do is play with our Apple iPhone. Problem is, that's exactly what you've been doing all day long, and, because of that, the battery is nearing that death mark, with pop-ups telling you that you have 20 percent... no, wait, 10 percent power left.
If there's one time this sucks, it's when you've done the right thing and called your parents to see how they are, put up with them going on and on about how your dad's been having problems with some minor health issue, and, just as you realize it has been almost 45 minutes that you've talked with them, your phone life is about to die.
Well, there goes any plans of listening to music while running or scrolling through Instagram while sitting around all night.
Until now... kind of.
You know how most of us think that opening up a bunch of apps by double-tapping our home screen and then swiping up to close out of those helps save our iPhone battery? As it turns out, we've been doing it so wrong this entire time.
While it may seem like closing out of those active apps is the right thing to do, Apple's website actually suggests something else for you to do—simply flip a switch, seriously!
Background Activity. This indicates that the battery was used by the app while it was in the background — that is, while you were using another app.
- To improve battery life, you can turn off the feature that allows apps to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and set the switch to Off.

Sure, this won't maintain your iPhone's battery life for hours or days, but it is going to help extend the life for a little while longer, allowing you to listen to some music while on the train ride home or, more importantly, allow you to use the Maps app so that you can find your way home.
