Tiger Woods' Daily Routine From His 20s Shows How Obsessed He Was With Competing

He may not be the best of the best, but it's safe to say that PGA golfer Tiger Woods is among the greatest to ever play the sport. With 14 major titles on his resume, Woods may still be trailing the all-time leader in that category, Jack Nicklaus, by four, but that doesn't take away from Tiger's accolades and influence on the game. In fact, a case could be made that Tiger Woods was a more transcendent star than Nicklaus, paving the way for a younger generation to get into golf and changing the perception of it.

With the recent injuries and poor performances of Tiger Woods, though, it's easy to forget all of the above. That said, when he was at his very best — like when he won the 2008 U.S. Open on a torn ACL — the work that Woods put in to remain at the top was second to no one, clearly pushing himself as if he we training for a boxing match, not, potentially, four days out on the golf course.


For those forgetting about how incredibly motivated Tiger Woods was to remain the best in his sport and, potentially, being talked about as an all-time great, take a look at what Tiger told fellow golfer, Justin Thomas, when asked about his old training routine. Note to self, it wasn't for the faint of heart.

Here, we'll paraphrase Woods' reply — since we're sure you needed to feel really bad about yourselves:

"JT was asking me this on the flight: ‘What did you used to do when you were about my age?’ Well, I used to get up in the morning, run four miles. Then I’d go to the gym, do my lift. Then I’d hit balls for two to three hours, I’d go play, come back, work on my short game, I’d go run another four more miles, and then if anyone wanted to play basketball or tennis, I would go play basketball or tennis. That was a daily routine. I’m not doing any of that now.”

That's right, Tiger Woods would run a total of eight miles, do a gym session, play some golf and then, if anyone else were up for it, would go out and play tennis or basketball. I'm not saying the guy was doing anything illegal, but, chances are, it'd take "normal people" loads of some sort of drug to even think about doing half of that.

So, while you contemplate whether or not a round of 18 holes should be considered your daily workout or not, just remember that 20-something Tiger Woods would've laughed at you for thinking your day was complete by only doing that. Then he'd probably go run laps around you to only enhance his point.
