The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues the story of Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher in a dark and violent world of magic and evil.
And after a number of years of waiting, it’s finally time to welcome back Geralt into our lives with what might be the only game you need this year.
Apologise to your other halves now. You won't be seeing them for a while….
Geralt is a Witcher, a lone bounty hunter trained to fight evil from early childhood and mutated to give him superhuman skills, strengths and reflexes. He’s the guy that people come to when they have a monster problem they need dealing with, and providing they pay him enough, he will take on anything.
He’s up against his biggest challenge yet, the Wild Hunt - a group of riders from another dimension who are hunting a playable character called Ciri, Geralt's adopted daughter.
Only Ciri can save the world, so you know what you have to do! It's also worth mentioning that if you haven’t played the first two Witcher games, don't worry, you can jump straight in here.
Within the first minutes of the game you are treated to some rather striking imagery of the woman Geralt loves (well one of them anyway), a sorceress named Yennifer of Venderberg, who plays an important part in the story.
Fans of The Witcher 2 will also remember Triss, who makes a return, but we're not going to give away any spoilers. There's also Charles Dance voicing one of the characters, and a mythical creature making a surprise appearance. So, yeah, there's definitely a Game Of Thrones vibe.
As you can probably imagine, the world of The Witcher is a violent and dangerous place, with monsters ripping people to shreds, evil tyrants executing people and generally bad things happening everywhere. So when Geralt strikes, he strikes hard.
He isn’t afraid to chop off someone’s head if they are in his way, and he won’t back down from a fight - whether it’s against a single foe, a big group or some sort of mythical beast.
A violent world calls for violent actions. You'll have multiple weapons at your disposal, including swords and a crossbow to cut down enemies with.
The combat is both brutal and responsive, and if that wasn’t enough, you'll also have some serious magical abilities, quite like a Force Push from Star Wars.
With over 200 hours of gameplay and quests to complete and a massive open world to explore, you'll definitely be busy with this one. Decisions you make have consequences that often don't become apparent until 20 or 30 hours after you've made them. So there'll be plenty of surprises.
There over 35 possible endings to the game, and you won't get bored. Played Skyrim? The Witcher 3's world is around 20% bigger, and is 35 times bigger than The Witcher 2. Kiss goodbye to your social life now.
We really liked the game, but it’s not perfect. There are a few minor issues, such as framerate drops and long loading times which can be frustrating, and your horse can often get stuck. But don’t worry, CD Projekt Red are already on the case addressing these issues so they don’t permanently spoil your experience of the game.
