Super Mario World

Year: 1991
Platform: SNES

Why it’s a classic: Though these days Yoshi can be found shoe-horned into old Nintendo nonsense, Mario’s green-hued steed brought the ailing plumber a new lease of life back in the 16-bit era. Add colourful graphics, inspired level design and music you’re still whistling to this day and you’ve got the best 2D platformer ever made.

Best bit: At the time, you’d be hard pushed to find anything more satisfying than gobbling up a green shell and spitting it out at a line of ten waddling Goombas. Without de-trousering, of course.
