Those ghosts from Pac-Man were sinister bastards. Between shifty eyes and an unnatural commitment to preserving apparently worthless white pixels, those multi-coloured spectres were the first to strike terror into the young hearts of gamers.

Thirty years on, they’ve evolved. With legs, arms and very, very big teeth. Thankfully, you’ve moved on too; acquiring shotguns, hand grenades and - more often than not - an improbable jaw-line. And so, just as it did in the arcade cabinets of the early 80s, the battle between good and evil is raging. Only now, thanks to high-definition graphics and surround sound, the whole experience is more trouser-ruiningly visceral than ever. Here's ten guaranteed nightmare-inducers.

I totaly agree with Roadie. The Fatal Frame series was scary as hell. That game set an atmosphere with scene, music, and sound effects that almost nothing can rival. Granted it didn't have all the straight out gore that, say, Manhunt had; it still had me jumping out of my chair on multiple occasions. Battle system aside, Fatal Frame should be in the 5.

Why isn't any Fatal Frame's on the list? Crimson Butterfly seemed scarier to me than Dead Rising.
