On the windows

You’re after bold, geometric designs on thick, warm curtains as opposed to anything involving beads. Definitely avoid beads, unless you want people mistaking your carefully pieced together living space for a hippy commune. Paisley patterns are a good shout; those droplet-shaped motifs of Persian origin, similar to one half of the Yin-Yang symbol. Roller window blinds were big in th ‘60s too, but owing more to their novel practicality than anything else. Go for the paisleys; they’re elegant and warm, and you can even get a matching pillow to go with the compulsory Eames lounge chair.
