By 1992, only DJs and Northern Soul losers were buying vinyl: CD had arrived and was selling by the million. Undeterred, Sony launched the MiniDisc, which required an expensive new gadget on which to play recordings, wasn’t especially good… and died out quicker than a dingo in a snowstorm. Interestingly, Sony is the company that rigorously pursued the Betamax home video system.
