Stars: Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, James D’Arcy

We say: Forget those cheesy swashbucklers you’ve seen on Sunday afternoon telly, and the unfeasibly long title – this is one genius of an epic. You’re plonked smack bang in the middle of an unforgiving ocean, aboard a nineteenth century British warship, with Russell Crowe playing one battle-thirsty sea dog of a captain in hot pursuit of a French man o’ war. Crowe’s ship, the HMS Surprise, is hopelessly outgunned and even more hopelessly outmanned – which leads to all kinds of bone-crunching battles around Cape Horn and beyond. Drownings, boardings, powder monkeys, heroes, villains, spectacular special effects and a damned good yarn to boot. Stirring stuff.

The Extras: Disappointingly, not a damned thing. Unless you cough up another nine quid for a second disc, that is…
