They say: Sitcom following the lives of three IT workers, from the man who brought you Father Ted.
We say: British comedy has been subject to a bit of a face-lift, recently. Ever since The Office, studio-shot sitcoms built around larger-than-life characters and predictable gags have made way for a subtler, ‘cleverer’ kind of funny. Which is all well and good, until some half-baked ‘mockumentary’ gets churned out, causing us to yearn for a return to the good old days of canned laughter and Men Behaving Badly.
With this in mind, the first series of The IT Crowd comes as a welcome breath of fresh air, rather than an outdated sitcom. Not only do the gags hold their own against today’s ‘smart comedy’, but they also manage to give sitcom leviathans like Father Ted and Blackadder a run for their money. Very funny stuff, even if you’ve never worked in an office.
