Stars: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson

They say: Rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London battle each other for trade secrets. Competition between the pair becomes so intense that it turns them into murderers.

We say: We’re not sure which we’d prefer – getting to strut around in a fully functioning Bat Suit or necking off with Scarlett Johansson. Thanks to director Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale’s done both, as the man who made the caped crusader good again with Batman Begins gives us The Prestige.

Bale, whose research material for his new English accent seems to have been an Eastenders omnibus, is world-renowned magician Alfred Borden. Borden’s friendly rivalry with fellow trick-monkey Hugh Jackman escalates to full-on war, as the pair seek to out-do each other with increasingly outrageous tricks that eventually endanger the lives of those around them. Throw this innovative and twisty story against a stunning Victorian London backdrop, add appearances from Michael Caine, David Bowie and Andy 'Gollum' Serkis and you’ve got a sure-fire winner.
