Stars: Joaquin Pheonix, Reese Witherspoon

They say: A chronicle of country music legend Johnny Cash's life, from his early days on an Arkansas cotton farm to his rise to fame with Sun Records in Memphis, where he recorded alongside Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.

We say: If you only know Johnny Cash through cheesy country duets, prepare to have your ears opened – thanks to Phoenix’s uncannily accurate vocals we get a large slice of the life of the Man In Black, from being in at the birth of rock and roll to his storming prison comeback gigs, and every track’s a lo-fi belter. Goosepimply brilliant in parts, and at others a tad cliched - which is strange, after all, this is a true-life story!
