What's it about? Following closely behind The Damned United, Awaydays is a film based on a popular book about football. Director Pat Holden has been charged with turning Kevin Sampson’s politically charged novel from 1998 about a notorious gang of football hooligans (The Pack) into something other than just another Football Factory.
Why we're excited: Since Michael Sheen and Tom Hooper’s adaptation of David Peace’s book was a success, football films can be considered to be on a roll. Even if it’s a roll of one. Awaydays shares The Damned United’s ‘cult classic’ status and is as much about the early years of Margaret Thatcher’s premiership as it is about Tranmere Rovers fans fighting. So it's not just twats with skinheads, but power-mad Tories as well.
Why we're nervous: Football hooliganism ain’t cool, and neither is the glorification of it.
