The chuckle-champ is in Ferrell's formidable slipstream
The Foot Fist Way kicked Danny McBride onto centre-stage as a marital arts expert. His character was no doubt inspired by Napoleon Dynamite's Rex Kwon Do, the idiot who practiced martial arts as his inner dickhead was a bit easy to see and consequently, punch.
The film was unleashed on the Sundance Film Festival in 2006 and was the talk of the town. Going up against Titans like An Inconvenient Truth and Who Killed The Electric Car, it was punching above its weight and fell into obscurity, but not before being spotted by Will Ferrell. Using his comedy contacts, cavernously deep pockets and seductively strong musk he had it re-released in 2006. It has only just been upgraded from online nick-able to actually-buyable DVD this January. If you haven't seen it yet you're missing lines like:
"Your weakness is disgusting to me."
"If you were in prison, you'd be raped because you exude feminine qualities. You're also a big ole fat piece of ass."
"Derek, have you got your cup on? Because I will hit you there."
"Meditation is terrific and all, but I've never heard of it saving anyone from a gang rape type situation."
Just a taster:
Every bit-role he has taken since has become the best part of whatever film he's in. He really proves that there are no small parts, just small actors. Alongside Bill Hader in Hot Rod he even manages to draw attention away from Isla Fisher's eye-magnets.
A few stepping-stone parts in the likes of Superbad, The Heartbreak Kid and Drillbit Taylor later and it was time to co-star as drug-dealing, tell-tale Red in the mighty Pineapple Express.
After talking with Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow, Danny recommended his old college friend and neighbor David Gordon Green to direct. They all got on great and the rest, as they rarely get to say, is comic history. It's worth keeping an eye out for this combination in future, but for now Danny's quotability game is strong in Pineapple Express:
"You just got killed by a Daewoo Lanos, motherfucker"
[Delirious, before passing out] "Today's my cat's birthday."
"Well, that's your loss 'cause I'm a great friend."
[Referring to shaving armpits] "You see that? It makes me aerodynamic when I fight. I can take danger."
Red in Pineapple Express:
McBride has co-written and starred in the series East Bound and Down about an ex-pro baseball player who has returned to his high school to teach PE. This classic cock-character should be perfect for Danny who is used to playing that type of role. This is due out next summer along with Land of The Lost where Danny co-stars with Anna Friel and Will Ferrell as three Americans in a land of dinosaurs. Hopefully the jokes will provide the originality where this re-re-done plot doesn't. With Danny McBride and Will Ferrell in cahoots this might even be the long-awaited competitor to Anchorman at last.
