The Dark Knight
The bandits: A troupe of clown-masked assailants, led – and brilliantly betrayed by – Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning Joker. One of the most sinister introductions to a villain we’ve ever seen.
The loot: Thousands of dollars of cash, from within the vault of a mob-controlled bank.
The plan: On the surface, it’s a simple one. Five guys swipe a mammoth haul of cash, then split it five ways. Except The Joker’s actually on the front line, waiting to walk off with the cash after carefully orchestrated double-crossing sees his cohorts take each other out.
Does it work? As far as the Joker’s concerned, perfectly. The bit when the bus crashes through the wall of the bank? A masterstroke of darkly comic timing.
