The Italian Job

The bandits: Michael Caine plays Charlie Croker, a well dressed mobster fresh out of prison and ready for crime. He loves the whiff of loads of money.

The loot: Four million dollars of gold from China that’s being brought to Turin, Italy to pay for loads of Fiats.

The plan: After borrowing money off a gangland boss, Croker assembles a computer expert, an electronics expert and some getaway drivers. They want to create a traffic jam in Turin so they can intercept the money and leg it, in Mini Coopers, through the self-inflicted traffic jam, while the police sit around and go “hmmmm”.

Does it work? Yes and no. Coker and the chaps swipe the gold and escape Turin in one of the best getaway sequences ever, but they have some issues in Switzerland with a coach, a cliff and an ambivalent ending.
