The London Astoria’s ten best gigs

Foo Fighters

When? 1997.

Why was it good? The Foo Fighters weren’t always the rock behemoth you’ve grown used to. It took a while for Dave Grohl’s band of hairy men to emerge from the shadows of his old band, Nirvana. Grohl went from drummer to frontman, from being a member of Nirvana that wasn’t Kurt Cobain, to the centre of attention and chief creator. And didn’t he handle it well. Dubbed ‘the nicest man in rock’ by anyone you can find with a mouth, the Foo’s appearance at the Astoria to tour second album The Colour And The Shape was the moment London fell in love with them.
