Nirvana

When? 1991.

Why was it good? Having played as an unknown bunch of long-haired rockers from Seattle supporting Mudhoney in 1989, Nirvana returned in '91 on the cusp of greatness. Never again would the soon-to-be legendary trio play to just 2000 people. Next time they came to England it was to headline Reading festival after Nevermind sold 10 million copies, and within two years of that, Kurt Cobain would be dead. Watching the video of them playing, you can almost see the walls bulging under the pressure of their imminent worldwide fame.
