The London Astoria’s ten best gigs

The Libertines

When? 2004.

Why was it good? Back before the shit hit the fan, the smack hit the vein and the band disintegrated into farcical tabloid exposure and musical mediocrity, The Libertines were the most exciting band in England. Baby-faced Pete Doherty and his handsome buddy Carl Barat exploded onto London’s trendy indie scene in a frenzy of narcotic-fuelled, leather-wearing Clash-influenced punk rock that had kids in skinny jeans and shit hair going mental. It’s hard to believe, but they were briefly regarded as saviours of the British rock scene. The Astoria shows were a high point for the short-lived quartet, and gave followers of the cockney maniacs a chance to see ‘em in full swing.
