The Specials

Who? Coventry-based ska band who were big in the ‘70s when being a skinhead meant you liked Jamaican music, not that you were in the National Front. Better than Madness. Not as cool as The Clash.

Why do we care? Between 1979 and 1981 they had ten consecutive top ten hits, then broke up. After appearing as Lily Allen’s backing band at Glastonbury 2007, they’ve reformed for an April tour.

Key songs? Ghost Town, released amid race-related unemployment riots in Brixton and Liverpool; and Too Much Too Young, a pro-contraception song (controversial at the time), are bona fide classics.
