Describing a sexy encounter under a boardwalk in Coney Island, New York, the recording of this song almost never happened: the night before the Drifters were due to go into the studio, lead singer Rudy Lewis died of a heroin overdose. Instead of cancelling the session out of respect, however, the band soldiered on and drafted in their old lead singer in Lewis’ place.
