The 10 best movie heists of all time

The Sting

The bandits: Robert Redford and Paul Newman take on mobster Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw) in an epically complicated ‘long-con’. This movie won Best Picture and Best Director (as well as five other Academy Awards) at the 1973 Oscars. Just ask your Dad.

The loot: While there’s a healthy financial reward for the bandits, the real loot here is revenge, and the satisfaction of out-conning the Chicago’s biggest crime boss.

The plan: It’s nauseatingly complex; a heist of opportunism and synapse-melting sophistication. You’ll need your wits about you to keep up. Or at the very least, not be stoned.

Does it work? Yes, beautifully.
