The Leopold, Sheffield
Sheffield: famous for Jarvis Cocker, steel and a surprising number of blokes who still storm around dressed like Joe Elliot from Def Leppard. But, until now, it’s not been so famous for swanky weekends away. This is unfair; less mental than nearby Leeds, Sheffield’s long boasted a top-flight music and club scene and a surprisingly continental feel (trams and pedestrianised streets). The Leopold is a perfect bolthole to explore the city from. A converted school five minutes from the station, the rooms have a ‘luxury meets Georgian elegance’ feel, with big windows, dark wood beds and modernist chairs. The hotel is bang in the middle of the new Leopold Square shopping district, which your girlfriend can explore while you get down to padding around in a dressing gown and surfing the free wi-fi, before dropping off under the Saturday papers.
